Feng shui, the ancient Chinese art of arranging a space to encourage harmony and flow, has quietly become part of how the Western world thinks about home. You need not adopt the whole philosophy to benefit from its best instincts.
The principles are surprisingly practical. Clear the clutter that blocks movement and attention. Let in natural light. Position the furniture so the room feels calm and the seating faces the door. Bring in a few living things - a plant, water, natural materials - and let each room have a clear purpose.
Whether or not you believe a well-ordered home changes your fortune, there is little doubt it changes your mood. And a space that feels calm the moment you walk in may be the most useful luxury of all.
