Celiac Disease: When Whole Grains Aren't Good for You

Celiac Disease: When Whole Grains Aren't Good for You

By now, you've probably heard all of the trendiest ideas about how to eat healthier - and live healthier. The mantra is sensibly monotonous: get your fruits, veggies, lean protein, and whole grains every day...

For most people that advice is sound. But for those with celiac disease, one part of it is genuinely harmful. Celiac is an autoimmune condition in which gluten - a protein in wheat, barley, and rye - triggers the immune system to damage the small intestine, interfering with the body's ability to absorb nutrients.

The symptoms are famously varied - digestive trouble, fatigue, and more - which is why so many people go undiagnosed for years. The only proven treatment is a strict, lifelong gluten-free diet, and the first step is a conversation with your doctor before removing anything. Diagnosed and managed well, most people with celiac go on to feel dramatically better.
